Scaling Renewable Energy: Mega-Projects vs. Decentralized Solutions

What is the future of renewable energy just two months after the anxiously anticipated UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen? The outcomes of Copenhagen will greatly influence the global energy mix of the future. It might jumpstart the groundbreaking rollout of renewable energy that is undoubtedly needed. A transformation of this magnitude poses challenges that the world has never seen. How can we source enormous amounts of clean energy in the 21st century? Should we focus on regional mega-projects of solar, wind, and hydro? Or do we have to undergo a fundamental paradigm shift in our thinking about energy generation and conceive the energy future in terms of local energy generation, smart grids, and decentralized energy storage?
